Feminist Consciousness-Raising Groups
Feminist Consciousness-Raising Groups Feminist consciousness-raising groups, or CR groups, began in the 1960s in New York and Chicago and quickly spread across the United States. Feminist leaders called consciousness-raising the backbone of the movement and a chief organizing tool. The Genesis of Consciousness-Raising in New York The idea to start a consciousness-raising group occurred early in the existence of the feminist organization New York Radical Women. As NYRW members tried to determine what their next action should be, Anne Forer asked the other women to give her examples from their lives of how they had been oppressed, because she needed to raise her consciousness. She recalled that labor movements of the Old Left, which fought for workers rights, had spoken of raising the consciousness of workers who did not know they were oppressed. Fellow NYRW member Kathie Sarachild picked up on Anne Forers phrase. While Sarachild said that she had extensively considered how women were oppressed, she realized that the personal experience of an individual woman could be instructive for many women. What Happened in a CR Group? NYRW began consciousness-raising by selecting a topic related to womens experience, such as husbands, dating, economic dependence, having children, abortion, or a variety of other issues. The members of the CR group went around the room, each speaking about the chosen topic. Ideally, according to feminist leaders, women met in small groups, usually consisting of a dozen women of fewer. They took turns speaking about the topic, and every woman was allowed to speak, so no one dominated the discussion. Then the group discussed what had been learned. Effects of Consciousness-Raising Carol Hanisch said that consciousness-raising worked because it destroyed the isolation that men used to maintain their authority and supremacy. She later explained in her famous essay The Personal is Political that consciousness-raising groups were not a psychological therapy group but rather a valid form of political action. In addition to creating a sense of sisterhood, CR groups allowed women to verbalize feelings they may have dismissed as unimportant. Because discrimination was so pervasive, it was difficult to pinpoint. Women may not have even noticed the ways a patriarchal, male-dominated society oppressed them. What an individual woman previously felt was her own inadequacy could have actually resulted from societys ingrained tradition of male authority oppressing women. Kathie Sarachild remarked on the resistance to consciousness-raising groups as they spread across the Womens Liberation movement. She noted that the pioneering feminists had initially thought to use consciousness-raising as a way to figure out what their next action would be. They had not anticipated that the group discussions themselves would end up being seen as a radical action to be feared and criticized.

A systemic necessity or an act of convenience Essay
A systemic necessity or an act of convenience - Essay Example Academic cheating must be considered first as an ethical issue before anything else. If students are taught ethics, ââ¬Å"[c]ollege can be a process of unlearning bad habits just as much as adding to oneââ¬â¢s knowledge base. A philosophical grounding for goodness, honesty and integrity helps students to see the value of maintaining ethical standards or rising to themâ⬠(Daines, 2010).à The whole system of education must be oriented towards inculcating the right values in students for them to pursue the right course of action. Finally, one also has to explore what pushes students towards cheating than pursuing honest ways of doing academics. Arguably, it is found that ââ¬Å"cheating tells us at least as much about educational environments as it does about studentsââ¬â¢ character or personalityâ⬠(Kohn, 2010). The shortcomings of the existing educational system such as the alienation of teachers and students from each other, emphasis on grades and scores than actu al learning, heavy work load, and severe completion among the students have substantially been contributing to the cementing of the cheating practice. ConclusionCertainly, the imperfections in the present education system lead students into cheating. However, the students too are complicit as it is a decision to cheat from their side. What is important is to make students familiar with an ethical code that could save them from engaging in academic cheating. What was once cheating chits did is at present being done by mobile text messages.

Flight deck system Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Flight deck system - Research Paper Example A cockpit is a small room located in front of an aircraft fuselage that serves as the operating area for the pilot and the co-pilot. It contains the flight instruments and controlling handles for the pilot to easily manipulate the aircraft. This is the area where the pilot and the co- pilot fly the aircraft. In some aircraft, the windows are shielded as a protection from the sun. Usually, windows of cockpits are capable of being opened while on the ground and some have heating elements to melt the ice and avoid fog, therefore clears the view. In retrospect, cockpits only contain few and simple parts including an adjustable seat, windscreens, control columns, rudder pedals, and parking brakes. This system has been used in the present until the development of a standard cockpit emerged. The beginning of autopilot system is designed for the pilotââ¬â¢s use and mainly to lessen the pilotââ¬â¢s workload. The Autopilot Control an artificial (attitude indicator) and directional gyro to operate elevator and rudder but not ailerons because wind dihedral produces the necessary roll stability. In the present day, an autopilot is an ability to take off, straight and level flight, descent, approach and landing except the taxiing. The advantage of autopilot is that it can land by keeping on the center of the runway line. It also helps the pilot by landing in a poor visibility such as in times of fog. Autopilot is controlled by computer software. It reads from the aircraftââ¬â¢s position and controls flight system to guide the aircraft.

Auebach Enterprises Essay These are not presented in scholarly discussion, but are simply the solutions. Student papers are expected to be written in scholarly discussion following APA formatting guidelines incorporating solutions and supported with scholarly research. CASE 3A ââ¬â AUERBACH ENTERPRISES Auerbach Enterprises manufactures air conditioners for automobiles and trucks manufactured throughout North America. The company designs its products with flexibility to accommodate many makes and models of automobiles and trucks. The companyââ¬â¢s two main products are MaxiFlow and Alaska. MaxiFlow uses a few complex fabricated parts, but these have been found easy to assemble and test. On the other hand, Alaska uses many standard parts but has a complex assembly and testing process. MaxiFlow requires direct materials costs which total $135 per unit, while Alaskaââ¬â¢s direct materials requirements total $110 per unit. Direct labor costs per unit are $75 for MaxiFlow and $95 for Alaska. Auerbach Enterprises uses machine hours as the cost driver to assign overhead costs to the air conditioners. The company has used a company-wide predetermined overhead rate in past years, but the new controller, Bennie Leon, is considering the use of departmental overhead rates beginning with the next year. The following planning information is available for the next year for each the four manufacturing departments within the company: Overhead Machine Costs Hours Radiator parts fabrication.. $ 80,000 10,000 Radiator assembly, weld, and test. 100,000 20,000 Compressor parts fabrication. 120,000 5,000 Compressor assembly and test.. 180,000 45,000 Total $480,000 80,000 Normally, the air conditioners are produced in batch sizes of 20 at a time. A production batch of 20 units requires the following number of hours in each department: MaxiFlow Alaska Radiator parts fabrication.. 28 16 Radiator assembly, weld, and test. 30 74 Compressor parts fabrication 32 8 Compressor assembly and test 26 66 Total 116 164 Required: 1. Pericles Funeral Speech :: essays research papers
Periclesââ¬â¢ Funeral Speech à à à à à Athens democracy has some evident differences of its own system compared to Spartaââ¬â¢s. They do not copy anyone else form of government, but run theirs in a unique way. In Athens everyone seems to receive fair treatment and poverty is not a struggle they encounter. Pericle informs that the people are friendlier and more respectful neighbors that Athens neighbors. Their individual system is like no others. Athens provides many activities such as regular games and sacrifices. Therefore, he says because of their own success they can enjoy the wonders of other countries. The Athenian system is very successful and operates smoothly because of the determination and effort the people of Athens put forth. à à à à à There are some factors that made Athens and Sparta different that need to be addressed. First, Athens controls an ââ¬Å"open cityâ⬠where visitors can influence and share there knowledge about the ââ¬Å"Athenian way.â⬠In Sparta children are dealt with in a very strict and upright manner. The women of Sparta seemed to have more freedom and power in the household because they were separated from their husbands for large amounts of time and became accustomed to this way of living. They are highly educated to the point where they are smarter than the average person their age. In Athens things are a little more laid back. They learn and mature at their own pace and still end up highly knowledgeable. When in battle Athens brings just themselves while Sparta brings their whole confederacy. à à à à à I believe that Athens had an advantage over Sparta. Even though both had their own individual strengths and came together to become one I believe Athens methods were stronger. The Athenians worked well together and seemed to be extremely spiritually motivated to overcome any obstacle. I also feel this way because the way they were brought up as children.

Digital Fortress Chapter 16
ââ¬Å"A ring?â⬠Susan looked doubtful. ââ¬Å"Tankado's missing a ring?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. We're lucky David caught it. It was a real heads-up play.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you're after a pass-key, not jewelry.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Strathmore said, ââ¬Å"but I think they might be one and the same.â⬠Susan looked lost. ââ¬Å"It's a long story.â⬠She motioned to the tracer on her screen. ââ¬Å"I'm not going anywhere.â⬠Strathmore sighed heavily and began pacing. ââ¬Å"Apparently, there were witnesses to Tankado's death. According to the officer at the morgue, a Canadian tourist called the Guardia this morning in a panic-he said a Japanese man was having a heart attack in the park. When the officer arrived, he found Tankado dead and the Canadian there with him, so he radioed the paramedics. While the paramedics took Tankado's body to the morgue, the officer tried to get the Canadian to tell him what happened. All the old guy did was babble about some ring Tankado had given away right before he died.â⬠Susan eyed him skeptically. ââ¬Å"Tankado gave away a ring?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah. Apparently he forced it in this old guy's face-like he was begging him to take it. Sounds like the old guy got a close look at it.â⬠Strathmore stopped pacing and turned. ââ¬Å"He said the ring was engraved-with some sort of lettering.â⬠ââ¬Å"Lettering?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, and according to him, it wasn't English.â⬠Strathmore raised his eyebrows expectantly. ââ¬Å"Japanese?â⬠Strathmore shook his head. ââ¬Å"My first thought too. But get this-the Canadian complained that the letters didn't spell anything. Japanese characters could never be confused with our Roman lettering. He said the engraving looked like a cat had gotten loose on a typewriter.â⬠Susan laughed. ââ¬Å"Commander, you don't really think-ââ¬Å" Strathmore cut her off. ââ¬Å"Susan, it's crystal clear. Tankado engraved the Digital Fortress pass-key on his ring. Gold is durable. Whether he's sleeping, showering, eating-the pass-key would always be with him, ready at a moment's notice for instant publication.â⬠Susan looked dubious. ââ¬Å"On his finger? In the open like that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Why not? Spain isn't exactly the encryption capital of the world. Nobody would have any idea what the letters meant. Besides, if the key is a standard sixty-four-bit-even in broad daylight, nobody could possibly read and memorize all sixty-four characters.â⬠Susan looked perplexed. ââ¬Å"And Tankado gave this ring to a total stranger moments before he died? Why?â⬠Strathmore's gaze narrowed. ââ¬Å"Why do you think?â⬠It took Susan only a moment before it clicked. Her eyes widened. Strathmore nodded. ââ¬Å"Tankado was trying to get rid of it. He thought we'd killed him. He felt himself dying and logically assumed we were responsible. The timing was too coincidental. He figured we'd gotten to him, poison or something, a slow-acting cardiac arrestor. He knew the only way we'd dare kill him is if we'd found North Dakota.â⬠Susan felt a chill. ââ¬Å"Of course,â⬠she whispered. ââ¬Å"Tankado thought that we neutralized his insurance policy so we could remove him too.â⬠It was all coming clear to Susan. The timing of the heart attack was so fortunate for the NSA that Tankado had assumed the NSA was responsible. His final instinct was revenge. Ensei gave away his ring as a last-ditch effort to publish the pass-key. Now, incredibly, some unsuspecting Canadian tourist held the key to the most powerful encryption algorithm in history. Susan sucked in a deep breath and asked the inevitable question. ââ¬Å"So where is the Canadian now?â⬠Strathmore frowned. ââ¬Å"That's the problem.â⬠ââ¬Å"The officer doesn't know where he is?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. The Canadian's story was so absurd that the officer figured he was either in shock or senile. So he put the old guy on the back of his motorcycle to take him back to his hotel. But the Canadian didn't know enough to hang on; he fell off before they'd gone three feet-cracked his head and broke his wrist.â⬠ââ¬Å"What!â⬠Susan choked. ââ¬Å"The officer wanted to take him to a hospital, but the Canadian was furious-said he'd walk back to Canada before he'd get on the motorcycle again. So all the officer could do was walk him to a small public clinic near the park. He left him there to get checked out.â⬠Susan frowned. ââ¬Å"I assume there's no need to ask where David is headed.ââ¬
